Challenge

Create a commemorative piece worthy of Gate City Bank’s 100-year milestone. The project needed to celebrate the bank’s history, reflect its community-centered culture, and provide customers and employees with a keepsake they would continue to use long after the anniversary year.

Solution

I designed a modern commemorative cookbook inspired by a series of recipe books Gate City Bank had published over the years. Featuring hundreds of recipes from past employee and customer submissions, the book honored the bank’s history while modernizing a long-standing tradition. The final piece became a functional keepsake for the centennial celebration.

Results

  • Designed a 300-page cookbook with 450+ recipes

  • 2,050 copies printed and distributed to customers and employees

  • Generated strong community engagement and positive feedback

Designing a Layout

The request was to take the hundreds of recipes previously printed by the bank and create a standardized layout to fit all of them.

I developed a modular layout to handle the wide variety of recipes. The flexible grid allowed for consistent structure while accommodating varying recipe lengths and details.

Organizing recipes by category (e.g., Beverages, Desserts, Dinner) and adding a table of contents made the book approachable and easy to navigate.

Structuring
Recipe Details

Each recipe includes a title, the contributor’s name, and location—keeping these details from the original recipes further tied the cookbook to the history of the bank and its community.

This was an element readers loved as they rediscovered family favorites.

A row of custom icons highlighted quick details including cooking method, difficulty, and year originally published, making the book easy to browse.

Custom Icon System

I built a tailored set of icons to quickly convey cooking methods. These visuals streamlined navigation and added a consistent design language across the cookbook.
